Why We Started Atlee Art Loft
Atlee Art Loft was born from a simple belief: every child deserves a place to make something with their hands, explore their imagination, and feel genuinely proud of what they create. Not just a one-off paint night or a drop-in craft table, but a real creative home, right in the neighborhood, that grows with them.
As a studio rooted in the Mechanicsville community, we set out to build something that Richmond's north side has long needed: a welcoming, skill-focused art space that serves kids from kindergarten through high school, offers summer camps families can count on, and brings neighbors together through the shared language of making art.
"We wanted to create the kind of place where a kid walks in nervous on the first day and walks out with something they can't wait to show their parents and can't wait to come back and make next."
What We Offer
Atlee Art Loft is more than a single class or a seasonal camp. We're building a full creative program designed to meet students where they are whether your child has never held a paintbrush or already fills sketchbooks at home.
Art Classes
Structured, skill-building classes for K–12. We focus on technique, not just fun — because real confidence comes from learning to do something well.
Summer Camps
Week-long and multi-day camps through the summer. Theme-based, hands-on, and small enough that every camper gets real instruction.
Private Events
Birthday parties, class celebrations, and family events — with art at the center. Custom experiences for groups of all ages.
Collaboration Camps
Special sessions that bring art together with other creative disciplines. This summer: a joint art + music camp with Mosley Music.
Our Approach to Art Education
We teach art the way it deserves to be taught with real technique, honest feedback, and the kind of encouragement that builds lasting confidence rather than just momentary enthusiasm. We believe kids rise to high expectations when those expectations are delivered with warmth.
That means our classes aren't just "free-create Fridays" strung together into a semester. We build skills progressively: color theory, composition, observation, mixed media, so that each student walks away with a genuine foundation, not just a pile of projects to hang on the fridge.
Small class sizes, real relationships
We keep our class and camp sizes intentionally small. That's not a limitation, it's a feature. When an instructor knows every student's name, their strengths, and where they're growing, the whole experience changes. Students take more risks, try harder things, and trust the process.
A studio that belongs to this community
We're not a franchise, and we're not a national chain that happened to open a location here. Atlee Art Loft is a locally owned, independent studio. That means our curriculum is shaped by the families we actually serve, our events reflect this community's calendar, and every dollar you invest here stays right here in Mechanicsville.
Summer 2026 Is Coming And Spots Fill Fast
Our summer camp schedule is in full swing for 2026, with themed weekly sessions running through the summer. We're especially excited about our collaboration camp with Mosley Music (June 29–July 2), where campers will explore the creative connections between visual art and music in a truly one-of-a-kind week.
